We are fascinated here at ReadWriteWeb about Hadoop . It can be used in so many ways. It gives you that sense of excitement that shows how big data can open up all kinds of possibilities.

Americans spent more time socializing on Facebook than searching with Google for the first time in August, and Yahoo edged out the search giant in monthly traffic, according to new data from marketing research firm comScore. Users spent 41.1 billion minutes on Facebook in August, 39.8 billion minutes on Google, and 37.7 billion on Yahoo. Yahoo beat out Google in monthly traffic, with 179 million unique visitors to Google’s 178.8 million.

A new report released today from mobile media provider Myxer examines the current trends among “check-in” applications, that is, the particular group of location-based mobile social networks that allow users to announce their arrival at a specific venue in return for rewards, coupons, deals or other offers. The company found that among the top mobile check-in applications, there was a clear leader: Booyah Networks’ MyTown , a location-based game built around your own city’s local shops and businesses.

Like a phoenix rising from Arizona, Google once again disrupted the search ecosystem today with the announcement and launch of Google Instant . “Google Instant isn’t search as you type, it’s search before you type,” said Google VP of Search Product and User Experience Marissa Mayer.

Forrester analyst Tim Sheedy writes in a new report that “The Internet and the mobile Internet have effectively combined.” Facebook users who access the social networking site through a mobile device are twice as active as users who don’t.

Bad economies always drag repression in their wake and social media is no exception to this rule. One of the worst instances is the recent arrest of Ali Abdulemam , a blogger and the editor of the long-running forum Bahrainonline.org (now shut down). Abdulemam was arrested for the same reason before – he had acted as a midwife to discussion on democracy among other things.

Eye-fi , the creator of camera memory cards that automatically upload photos and videos to your computer or favorite website, has announced that it will launch a software development kit and community this Fall. That means that any approved application will be able to pull media automatically from your camera into your account online when you walk past an accessible wifi signal. Will the company be generous in approving use of its developer platform?
